Finding the road back

I found you again
not as you were
and not as I was
but somewhere softer
between memory and now

Once, love carried fear
Every laugh without me
felt like a door closing
Every shadow
looked like loss rehearsing itself

Time has a quiet way
of sanding down sharp things
Jealousy grew tired
of holding the knife
I let it fall

What is past no longer argues
It sits beside us
well-behaved
no longer demanding
to be believed

I do not ask where you have been
Those roads shaped you
as mine shaped me
We meet here
not to audit the years
but to live

In the quiet hours
I see the rainbow’s whisper
across the water of our hearts
a bridge of light
connecting what was lost
to what can now be found

Love returned
is not possession
It is recognition
A choice made without fear
that it might be taken away

Let bygones stay bygones
where they belong
behind us
grateful for the lesson
released from the sentence

What we hold now
is lighter
stronger
and finally free
to be love
without guards
under the rainbow’s gentle gaze
