Enterprise architecture methodology and Classification framework
I prefer dealing with architecture in two perspectives (Zachman and TOGAF) . I have heard the argument that people compare them as competitors, but they’re actually solving different problems.
- Zachman answers:“What architecture descriptions should exist?”
- TOGAF answers:“How do we create, govern, and evolve an enterprise architecture?”
| Zachman | TOGAF |
|---|---|
| Classification framework | Enterprise architecture methodology |
| Organizes architectural artifacts | Provides a process for developing architecture |
| Static | Iterative |
| No lifecycle | Full architecture lifecycle |
| No governance process | Governance built in |
| No project guidance | Project and portfolio guidance |
| Doesn’t prescribe deliverables | Defines deliverables, artifacts, and governance |
| Technology-neutral | Technology-neutral |
