When my young daughter asked me if she could attend J-Popcon in Copenhagen, I was initially quite opposed to her attending the convention alone. The district where the conversion is held has improved a lot yet has quite a way to go to be considered a safe zone for younger children. I knew the convention was well-guarded and kept safe, but the surroundings were a major worry. I thought, Why not combine my photo interest and solve the worry by attending the convention with her as a registered volunteer photographer? and it turned out to be a blast.

Enlisting was digital and fairly straightforward, with a few lines of reasoning behind applying, the camera equipment I use, and the experiences that I have had as a photographer. Being vetted by the police is standard practice and was easily done through the systems provided by the convention.

The tasks to complete as a photographer were carefully organized into job descriptions and took the shape of jobs with descriptions, like “Tsubasa Stage 18/02/2024 12:00–13:00.” Take in the energy of the panel and remember to pay attention to the judges and the crowd as well.”

Between tasks, when we weren’t working on the assigned tasks, we could enjoy the convention atmosphere by taking “ask-first-photograph-with-concent” pictures. Most of the people I spoke with at the event were really proud of their outfits and eagerly agreed to have their photo taken. I think the positive energy built up by both parties being ready for the photograph, clearly shows.

When it comes to getting to the convention, I strongly advise against taking the car. Parking prices during the day are exorbitant, akin to daylight robbery, and finding a parking space can be a daunting task due to the limited availability.

Instead, I highly recommend utilizing public transportation. Not only is it convenient, but it’s also incredibly easy. The convention venue is a mere 150 meters away from the railway station, making it a hassle-free option for attendees. Whether you’re travelling by train, bus, or any other form of public transport, you’ll find that getting to the convention is a breeze.

By opting for public transportation, you not only save yourself the stress of navigating traffic and hunting for parking but also contribute to reducing traffic congestion and environmental pollution. It’s a win-win situation for both attendees and the community.

So, leave your car at home and hop on public transport. You’ll thank yourself for the decision when you arrive at the convention hassle-free and ready to enjoy all the excitement it has to offer.

Volunteer accommodation at a nearby school offers a complementary option for lodging, making it an easy choice for those looking to contribute their time and effort. While the facilities may be limited, they are well-guarded to ensure the safety and security of volunteers.

Despite the simplicity of the accommodations, there are several advantages to staying at a nearby school. Firstly, it provides a convenient and cost-effective solution for volunteers, eliminating the need to find alternative lodging options that may be more expensive or farther away from the volunteering site. This allows volunteers to focus their resources on the cause they are supporting rather than on accommodation expenses.

Working as a photographer at JPop was an absolute blast, and there are countless reasons why. Firstly, the environment itself was brimming with creativity and passion. Each day brought new opportunities to capture the vibrant energy of the J-pop world, whether through character photography, or behind-the-scenes shots.

Moreover, the JPop community was incredibly welcoming and inclusive. It wasn’t just about capturing moments; it was about forming genuine connections with like-minded individuals who shared a love for Japanese pop culture and photography, I do feel that several of these connections will turn into lasting friendships, making every assignment feel more like a reunion with good friends rather than just another job.

Attending these conventions as a participant, I can strongly recommend joining a local group like CosPlayYouth, as such organizations serve as a hub for the cosplay community and often provide resources, tutorials, forums, and event listings for cosplay enthusiasts to connect, learn, and share their passion for cosplay. Moreover, such groups bridge geographical boundaries and cultural differences.
